Battery or wired video doorbell: which should you choose?
Choose a wired video doorbell if you have a working bell supply, because it never needs charging and records reliably. Choose a battery model if there is no wiring or you rent; expect to recharge it every few weeks to months depending on how busy your front door is.
Wired: the set-and-forget option
A wired doorbell takes power from a low-voltage supply, usually the existing bell transformer. It does not run out of charge and tends to have faster wake-up. The cost is that the supply must be suitable. If it is not, a new feed is needed, which is electrical work.
Battery: easy but maintained
A battery unit stays up with two screws and needs no cable. The price is charging. A busy front door, a cold winter and high video quality all shorten battery life. Some owners add a small solar charger to cut the chore.
Which suits which home
Owners of a house with an old wired bell: choose wired. Renters, flats and hallways where wiring is impossible: choose battery. Frequent callers or a busy street: wired, since the battery will drain quickly.
Chimes and sound
Many doorbells need an indoor chime to ring. If you are keeping your old mechanical chime, check it is compatible, because some wired models need a particular chime or a bypass. We test this on site.
Common question
Can I fit a wired doorbell myself?
If your existing supply is suitable it can be straightforward. If not, new wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
